Module 7

I learned a lot of useful knowledge from this class, and I think it applies to my future career. I not only learned the good point of online social networking but also learned different marketing rules. Furthermore, after taking this class, I understand the importance of online media in marketing and how technology is connected with social media. The most important knowledge that I learn is .com bubble and long tail, because I never heard about that before. Therefore, these are meaningful knowledge that I learn from this class.

Globe just like other dot-com bubble companies experienced a dramatic rise in their stock prices and they moved more rapidly with less vigilance than usual. They chose to alleviate their risks by starting many contenders assuming the market would decide which would be successful. Low interest rates of 1998-999 helped boost the start up capital amounts. Although the Globe had rational plans and managerial ability, they lacked the characteristics and were only able to market their ideas to investors through the dot-com concept.  The managers of Globe should never have placed their bet on harnessing network effects to expand the market share while the company was operating at a loss. During the loss phase, they should not have relied on venture capital and especially preliminary public offering of stocks to recompense their expenses when there was no income being generated.

           During the dot-com bubble, innovation was uncontrolled and as a capitalistic society, we kind of view innovation as an excellent thing. In my view, this is true in most industries not finance. Though many of the new websites and businesses were uncalled-for and many of them unsuccessful, the ideas, jobs and businesses that grew from the dot-com bubble after the dust settled were useful. Dot- com bubble crisis was a lesson that in finance, innovation should be synchronized.

        Economists predict there will be similar bubbles with new technologies. We have many people with capital and eager to spend in the next craze. These people do not even know the internet technology well, leave alone understanding its use and the codes used.  All these are fundamental to thrive with a web based or mobile based initiative. For instance, the Face book acquisition of Instagram has raised eyebrows as investors have been questioning the worth of Instagram in billions of dollars. We also have a further issue similar to the initial dot-com bubble to be that of venture capitalists not understanding technology as anticipated. What we have today are a group of individual investors with money, plenty of venture capitalists who are not conversant with internet technology, and many elegant entrepreneurs trying to make big cash. In my view, this combination is lethal and it is pointing to a possible dot- com bubble.

           Did investors learn any lessons from the crisis? Some lessons were learnt the hard way. Most investors are now trading cautiously as the technological market is thriving well. Thus, institutional investors that invest in venture capital are selective in choosing the firms they invest, and are undertaking sufficient research before investing their resources.  In some cases, they have been driving hard bargains for better management fees and shares of profits. As limited partners, they are aware in the occurrence of a bubble burst they would feel the most pain as they invested the bulk of the money.

        The days when institutional investors threw money at venture funds are long gone as they demand more lucidity. To avoid failings, big start ups should make small bets. Investors now know that maintaining a tight restraint on finances is the solution to a company’s survival especially in the current economic conditions. In modern times, technology stands out as the only global segment with additional net cash than debit on its balance sheet. This places investors in a safe spot. In most cases, the fund has a huge market cap bias with a range of more than 50 companies. In relation to its performance, it is ranked first quartile in its sector over five years with returns of 51 percent compared to 41 percent of an average fund.

           Dot- Com bubble era was a medium for the growth of the internet. Though most dot-com companies lost millions of dollars in what economists called definitive foolishness, the bubble no doubt was vital for the prosperous future of the internet. Thus, we can say that the economic impact of the bustling of the bubble was outweighed by the benefits of the internet we enjoy today. The following two effects of the dot- com bubble were constructive and worked to better the internet. It was obvious only those who could access internet with a decent band width and was facilitated with OFC with all network elements such as gateways and routers were allowed to transact businesses.

          The world wide expansion of network infrastructure was essential to make internet omnipresent and global.  It took 5 years for the internet to realize the infrastructural growth which would have taken at least 15 years. Since the usual business models were not applicable, the new rules of internet developed swiftly during the dot-com bubble. If the insanity for dot- com companies had not existed then, VC’s and other corporate entities would not have cared much about the infrastructures of the constantly growing internet. Most dot- com companies are surviving up-to-date, and numerous concepts developed still exist today.

           Research has shown that telephone applications similar to the ones designed for i-Phone and android phones experienced a bubble. This is because productivity growth has been stirred by profound investment in information and communication technology. The strong productivity growth after 2001 recession makes it probable that some gains of the late 1990’s may tolerate telephone applications intended for i-Phones experience.

           Google’s Android and Apples IOS have gained an enormous market share in the mobile phone industry. To generate the value with the capital it has invented, Apple will need to launch a new i-Phone each year to ensure consumers are constantly upgrading to newer models. Each time Apple launches a product, it gets accepted widely with consumers at times camping outside its stores to get the newest model of i- Phone and i-Pad. The market also expects Apple to maintain its growth in its top and bottom lines in the long term.   Failure to meet these prospects will result to a big drop in Apple’s share price. There is always some pressure on Apple’s future earnings releases as investors expect Apple to continue the successful trail. In conclusion, the dot-com boom and bust was “a case of too much too fast.”

If I were going to open a store, I would rather make an online store. Currently, an increasing number of people like online shopping, and online shopping is really popular. From my personal perspective, online shopping is much better than a mortar store, because people are able to buy commodities online instead of going to the store; it will save much more time. Also, people can buy products from any places if they have Internet. Moreover, it is more convenient and easy for people have different choices online instead of selecting in the real store. As for me, every time when I see lots of stuff in the mortar store, I do not want to shop here, because it is really difficult and tired for me to buy products. In addition, online shopping is secure and convenient for people to pay, return and exchange goods especially someone just for travelling, and they do not need to take a flight to go to the mortar store to do these things. Thus, I think online store is better than mortar store.

From my personal perspective, the more marketable blog should have good content, music, advertisements and good looking. I think the first impression is very significant for everyone’ attraction. As for me, the first thing that I do is to set up the dashboard to make it look in good order in order to have a good looking. The reason is that if I visit some blogs, which are really messed up, I will not choose to continue to follow that blog. Secondly, I will upload some pretty pictures to decorate my blog to make it fashion and attractive. No doubt, good music is a very necessary part for a marketable blog, because popular music can make people relax and comfortable when they view the blog. Sometimes, I just visit my friends’ blogs for listening music, so music plays a really important role for marketable blog. Next, not only uploading some famous advertisements are really important but also uploading some good links on my blog. It is convenient for people to link to others’ blog or interesting blogs or events. Therefore, these are my ideas to redesign my blog.

From my personal perspective, one example that appropriately represents the importance of online media in marketing is online shopping. Currently, an increasing number of people like shopping online, and online shopping is not only convenient but also faster than going to stores.Furthermore, online shopping is really powerful, people can buy anything they want online, and there are different varieties of choices for any products. For example, in China, there is the largest online shopping website which named Taobao, people cannot only buy clothes and food but also cosmetics and electronics. Moreover, it can ship to other countries, and when I have been to America, I found that most my friends buy clothes and food on Taobao and ship to America. As for me, I usually buy clothes online, because Athens is a small town, so it is inconvenient to buy clothing or food; at that time, I will choose online shopping, online shopping can save my time instead of going to stores, so Online shopping is really important in people's lives.

This is the first link that I  find which named "Look Out! Rehash Ahead in a Four-Hour Sinking (Titanic, a Mini-Series, Starts on Saturday on ABC)". In this article, Stanley criticized that the Titanic in 3-D, and Stanley stated that Titanic is a mini-series, and each episode has the same characters, but from different views of angles. Titanic is one of my favorite film, and it is really romantic. Every time when I watch it, I am moved by the storytelling. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were acted the romantic love story.

This is the second link that I choose from the lists. In the article, "Miss G.: A Case of Internet  Addiction", Heffernan describes that the case of internet addiction and one of Gabriela's professor had told the author she slept with her laptop, so the Internet addiction is very serious in today's society. As for me, I think I cannot live without Internet, and everyday when I wake up, the first thing for me is to find my Iphone to surf on the Internet to log on social networkings. Also, I can stay at home all the time with my laptop, and I not only listen to music but also watch videos, play games online.

This is the third link that I find which named "Fighting the Forces of Hell, Soon With Real Greenbacks (Diablo III Video Game, From Blizzard Entertainment)". Schiesel demonstrated how popular the Diablo is, and "there was little special about Diablo II's basic play structure: chopping herds of fantasy monster into bits and collecting the booty." When Diablo III came out, it was really popular. I knew most my friends including my boyfriend bought it and played it. They really enjoyed playing this game, and most my friends play it all the day without doing anything. Schiesel described that "the Diablo formula were simple: Kill the beasties, take their treasure, sell it, upgrade your magical equipment, rinse and repeat." I never play this game, but when I watch my boyfriend and friends play it, I feel that they really enjoy it. Moreover, my boyfriend does not good at playing any games, but when he plays Diablo, he easily knows how to play it.

After I read these two articles, I learn how to criticize television shows, which critic is good and how critic impact the fans of shows. Also, different people have different opinions about one show, but most people trust critics who they like; then audiences will not be influenced by outside of the voices. Therefore, the critics really play a significant role among audiences and fans, because they will give good evaluations and the audiences will trust their critics to watch them, For example, every time when I watch some Chinese series, I will look at the evaluation and critics about these series and choose the best one to watch. However, different people have different opinions and favorites about television shows, so sometimes even some series have good evaluations and critics, I do not like watching them. Furthermore, I learn that the new style of TV criticism Sepinwall helped invent is developed and what is the difference between television criticism used to be like and television criticism in today's lives.

The first hyperlink that I click is A.V. Club, because I am curious about this club and I want to know what is about; I never heard about this club before. After I went to the homepage of A.V Club, I found that there were different sections on this website, such as film, tv club, music, video, books, comedy and chicago. I click the film section, and I discovered lots of the reviews of films, and people can leave a comment to each film. Moreover, I noticed that there is a trending called 3-D, I entered it and there was a article discussed about When 3-D is the Only Way to See a Movie(even for those ho hate 3-D). People can post their comments and share articles and videos. The second hyperlink that I choose is Gawker's Gossip Girl recaps, the reason I choose this one is that Gossip Girl was the show that I used to watch, and I really loved the first four seasons. The most characters I like are Chuck and Serena. In this article, there are descriptions about each character. In addition, there are several comments.
